Modular Design:

Modular Design as defined on Wikipedia

A modular smartphone is a smartphone made using different components that can be independently upgraded or replaced in a modular design. This aims to reduce electronic waste, lower repair costs and increase user comfort

G5, released in March, was the first smartphone to feature a modular design. The approach using modular design is to provide flexibility to the smartphone users and reusability. This design has drawn a huge attention at that time, but results were not as good as were expected. Because it was difficult for some users to pop out battery and attach another module called “Friends” by LG. Although this idea was good but practical implementation was led to the fall of the G5 sales.

LG’s smartphone business is not doing for them these days. So, they decided to drop the modular design from its next flagship smartphone and apply integral design approach. G6 is expected to release in first quarter of 2017, LG is relying heavily on G6 results. Still LG has not revealed any announcement on the design of G6, but there are high chances that G6 will feature an integral design approach.
