Apple iPad mini (2026) gets biggest update ever — OLED, A20 Pro, IP67
Apple unveiled the all-new iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display, A20 Pro chip on 2nm, IP67 water resistance, and Wi-Fi 7 — the most significant refresh since the original mini.

What changed

Apple announced the new iPad mini on October 26, 2026, calling it the biggest update ever for the compact tablet. The headline features: an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display (up from 8.3-inch LCD), the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, IP67 water and dust resistance, a thinner 5.4mm body, and first-ever Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support via Apple's new N1 wireless chip. Pre-orders open October 28; units ship November 6. Pricing starts at $699 for the 128 GB Wi-Fi model.

Display and design

The switch to OLED brings pixel-level lighting control, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,200 nits peak brightness (2.2× the previous generation), and a 1 nit minimum for comfortable dark-room use. A nano-texture glass option reduces glare for outdoor work. Bezels are 24% thinner while the overall footprint stays the same. The new Midnight and Starlight finishes replace the previous color lineup. IP67 rating means the iPad mini survives immersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes — a first for the mini line.

Performance: A20 Pro on 2nm

The A20 Pro uses an M-series-inspired package on TSMC's 2nm process. It delivers a 6-core CPU (60% faster multithreaded), a 7-core GPU with neural accelerators per core (2.7× graphics performance with dynamic caching, mesh shading, and ray tracing), and a 32-core Neural Engine on 512 GB models (2× AI throughput). Unified memory bandwidth doubles. In practice, apps like Procreate Dreams, ZBrush, Draw Things, and Detail see significant speed gains.

Connectivity firsts for iPad mini

The N1 wireless networking chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support — all firsts for the mini. Cellular models get Apple's new C2 modem, which Apple says is 50% faster and more power-efficient than the previous generation, with seamless Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoff so FaceTime calls don't drop when you move between networks. eSIM support is included for digital plan management.

iPadOS 27 and Siri AI

The new iPad mini launches with iPadOS 27, which introduces Siri AI (beta in 27.2) — a rebuilt Siri with personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, and a more capable on-device model. Apple Intelligence features include Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, and Extend for photos; the Image Playground app; and Safari's Notify Me for monitoring page changes. iPadOS 27.2 adds Extended Display Mode for windowed multitasking on external displays, freely resizable windows, window tiling, and Exposé. Apple Intelligence supports 16 languages; Siri AI beta launches in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish (not in the EU at launch).

Cameras, audio, and accessories

The 12MP front camera moves to the landscape edge for natural Center Stage video calls. The 12MP rear camera gains Smart HDR 4, 4K60 video, and an Adaptive True Tone flash for better document scanning. A new acoustic display design uses woofers paired through the display and custom tweeters hidden between glass and aluminum for richer sound. Apple Pencil Pro and the new Magic Keyboard for iPad mini (with function row and trackpad) are sold separately.
