Android Earthquake Alerts expand to over 200 regions
Global expansion of the alerts system
Google has announced a major update to the Android Earthquake Alerts System, significantly increasing its global footprint. The system, which is the largest mobile-based earthquake detection network in the world, has expanded from 98 countries and regions to over 200. This includes new support for regions such as Guatemala and Panama.
A billion warnings sent
Since the system first launched in 2021, Google has already sent more than one billion earthquake alerts. These warnings are designed to give users a few seconds of notice before shaking begins, providing crucial time to find cover and protect themselves and their families.
Understanding the alert levels
Android users in supported regions will receive one of three different types of alerts depending on the intensity of the detected earthquake:
- Be Aware: A notification for light shaking that informs the user an earthquake has been detected nearby.
- Be Ready: A more detailed alert for stronger shaking, instructing the user to prepare for action.
- Take Action: A full-screen emergency alert for moderate to heavy shaking, providing immediate safety advice.
Upcoming enhancements to warnings
Google is not stopping at expansion. In the coming months, the "Be Ready" alerts will be upgraded to provide more granular data. Users will soon be able to see a visual map showing the radius of the detected shaking, an estimate of the earthquake's magnitude, and dynamic updates with a button to access more information as it becomes available.
